Grey squirrels are typically fully weaned at about 12 to 16 weeks of age in the wild. At this stage, they have developed the necessary skills to forage for food independently and are capable of eating solid foods such as nuts and fruits, which are essential to their diet. Prior to this period, while they may start sampling solid foods around 5-7 weeks, they still rely on their mother's milk for essential nutrients and hydration. The weaning process is a gradual transition, where maternal care decreases as the young squirrels grow, and they learn to navigate their environment and find food on their own. Full independence typically aligns with this 12 to 16-week timeframe, when they are proficient in foraging and prepared to branch out from their maternal nest.
